(Big Island)
These very easy to visit sites are right in Hilo town and are easy
to find. At both locations there is convenient parking and easy
accessible viewing areas. Boiling Pots is a succession of big pools
connected by underground flow or cascades and whose waters roll
and bubbles as if boiling. Legend has it that Maui, son of Hina,
chased a giant lizard up to the boiling pot area and asked Pele
to send down fire rocks to kill the lizard – and today the
water still boils. The 80-foot Rainbow Falls is renowned for the
rainbow formed from its mist many mornings, primarily because the
falls face east. Legend say that the cave beneath the waterfall
was the home of Hina, mother of the demigod Maui.
