Hawaii Volcanoes National Park (Big Island)

Unquestionably one of Hawaii’s greatest value attractions, no one leaves Hawaii Volcanoes National Park without being impressed. Established in 1916 to protect and display the beauty of the earth re-creating itself, this National Park encompasses more than 333,000 acres and stretches from sea level to the 13,677 foot summit of the world’s most massive volcano, Mauna Loa. There is so much you can do – you can walk through a real lave tube, you can hike hundreds of miles of trails through devastated landscape, lush forests or right across Kileuea caldera, and you can watch lava as it pours into the Pacific ocean as Kileuea volcano has been erupting continuously since 1983! Make sure you stop by the Kilauea Visitor Center, located just inside the park entrance, which offers visitor information and exhibits (films and videos are shown in the auditorium throughout the day.) Another great stop is the Thomas A. Jaggar Museum, located about three miles from the park entrance, which offers earth science displays and features murals depicting Hawaiian culture. An adjacent overlook offers a panoramic view of Kilauea Caldera and Mauna Loa. Even though a visit to Volcanoes National Park is very safe, please make sure you follow all the directions and signage of the National Park Service, because they want to make sure you have a safe and fun visit. If you get to the Big Island, this value attraction is a must see!
