(Big
Island)
This rather small museum packs a big punch when it comes to tsunamis
– also known as “killer waves” for the destruction
and death they often cause. If you’re on the Hilo side of
the Big Island it’s well worth the stop, as you will see unbelievable
exhibits, pictures and hear amazing oral history stories from people
who survived 60+ foot waves. The museum features a series of in-house
permanent exhibits that interpret the tsunami phenomena, the Pacific
Tsunami Warning system, the history of tsunamis in the Pacific Basin,
tsunamis of the future, myths and legends about tsunamis, and public
safety measures for tsunami disasters. What makes this museum so
unique is that it is a living monument to those who lost their lives
in past tsunamis. It’s hard to imagine what it must have been
like for the residents of Hilo to be hit by not one, but two massive
tsunamis in just a14-year period.
