Many years ago, for more than 100 years, 33 industrial railroads
existed in Hawaii. Trains would haul sugar cane to the mills, and
would carry plantation workers between the sugar fields and their
homes. Today, Hawaii’s original railroads have almost disappeared
entirely. The Lahaina Kaanapali & Pacific Railroad, also known
as the “Sugar Cane Train” is an authentic reproduction
of the train that once ran through West Maui transporting visitors
from the Maui of long ago to the beauty of Maui today. The locomotive
covers a six-mile stretch of track at a leisurely pace at one point
at an elevation offering panoramic views of neighboring islands
and the West Maui Mountains. During the ride, the conductor will
point out sites of interest along the way. If visiting between the
months of December and April, it is common to spot humpback whales.
Although the sugar cane fields are now gone, the Sugar Cane Train
continues to preserve Maui’s rich sugar cane heritage. It’s
great fun for the kids!
