Spouting
Horn near Poipu, Kauai

(Kauai)
Spouting Horn is a natural phenomenon caused by the ocean waves
breaking or rushing under a lava shelf, which creates a geyser that
can shoot 50 feet into the air. Besides the Spouting Horn, there
is another blowhole nearby that only blows air and makes a groaning
sound. Hawaiian legend has it the noise form this blowhole is actually
from a mo`o, known to most of us as a lizard, that got stuck chasing
a Hawaiian man named Liko. The moaning sound is the lizard crying
out in frustration and hunger. Spouting Horn shoots the highest
when it is high tide, and can be particularly beautiful at sunset.
