(Kauai)
A little known Hawaiian historical fact is that the Russians built
a fort in Hawaii, actually on southern Kauai. For a while in the
early 1800’s, the king of Kauai, Kaumauali`i, toyed with the
idea of having the Russians help him fight King Kamehameha I, but
eventually the Kauai ruler made a pact to follow Kamehameha. The
Russians first came to the islands to trade their Alaskan furs for
fruits, vegetables and meat. All that’s left today is the
boulders that once made up the fort. Another little known fact is
that just down from the fort on the waters edge, Captain Cook landed
in 1778 on the ill-fated voyage that ultimately cost him his life
on the Big Island.
