(Big Island)
The largest collection of petroglyphs in Hawaii are located within
this 200-acre preserve. Once difficult to get to, this area is now
easily reached via the Mauna Lani Resort. The best time to take
pictures, of the more than 3,000 petroglyphs, is in the early morning
or late afternoon when the shadows are longest – and you’ll
have the added benefit of it not being so hot. You will be able
to see all types of different designs – families; Hawaiian
tools; fish; chiefs; fishermen; paddlers and much more. PLEASE note
though that the petroglyphs are very fragile and can be easily damaged
or destroyed – please take every precaution to preserve the
Hawaiian cultural treasure.
Directions:
This preserve is located off Queen Kaahumanu Hwy. (19) at Mauna
Lani Resort. To reach the carvings, take a right at the traffic
circle to the Ritz-Carlton Mauna Lani Hotel and a next right at
the golf course. The 1.5-mile Malama Trail starts north of Mauna
Lani Resort and the trailhead is marked by a sign and interpretive
kiosk.
