(Kauai)
Located a little off the beaten path, Opaeka`a Falls is not really
accessible by river or trail (okay there’s rumors of a trail,
but because of steep drop offs and mud, it’s really not advisable.)
The Falls are located on the north branch of the Wailua River, and
it flows year-round primarily because the rivers origin is Mount
Waialeale, one of the wettest locations on earth. There is an overlook
on Kuamo`o Rd. that provides an excellent view. As Wailua Falls
faces east, the best time to view it is in the morning when the
sun shines directly on it and creates shimmering cascade of colors
in the mist from the falls. The name Opaeka`a refers to when shrimp
were abundant in the river and churned in the water at the base
of the falls.
