North Kohala - Hawi & Kapa`au (Big Island)

Nestled up in the far north of the Big Island, you will find the birthplace of King Kamehameha I, a heiau (a Hawaiian temple) more than 1,500 years old, the original statue of Kamehameha I (a replicate is in Honolulu) and the lookout to Pololu Valley. Although most Big Island visitors don’t venture in this direction, it is well worth the journey as such much of the landscape hasn’t changed much from the days of the ancient Hawaiians. Off Akoni Pule Hwy. (270) near the turnoff for ‘Upolo airport for small airplanes (if the dirt road is wet or muddy, don’t attempt to drive in as you will get stuck), there is the Mo`okini Heiau and nearby the birthplace of King Kamehameha I. Mo`okini Heiau, the largest temple in Hawaii, was dedicated to Ku, the Hawaiian war god. This heiau was kapu (off limits) until 1978, when its Hawaiian guardian, Kahuna Nui Lum, re-dedicated to Hawaii’s children and began allowing visitors (if you visit this heiau, PLEASE show the utmost respect as this a living spiritual temple and is a very sacred site.) If you head up the highway some more you will pass through Hawi if you need you can get gas or lunch (the Bamboo Restaurant & Bar is considered one of the best dining locations on the Big Island.) A little further and you’ll come to the town of Kapa`au and the original statute of King Kamehameha I (it was salvaged from a ship-wreck and sent to the district of Kamehameha’s birth.) At the end of the road you will be at the lookout to Pololu valley, and the view is fantastic! On the way back consider taking Hwy. 250 which will bring you to the town of Waimea, and along the way you will see some of the most beautiful vistas Hawaii has to offer!
