The cemetery, opened to the public in July, 1949, is located in
Puowaina crater, which is translated from Hawaiian means “Hill
of Sacrifice.” Punchbowl, as it is known locally, encompasses
over 111 acres and is the final resting place for mare than 45,000
U.S. servicemen and women and their spouses. Outside of Arlington
National Cemetery, Hawaii’s Punchbowl, is far and away one
of the most beautiful, serene and awe-inspiring of all our national
cemeteries. More than five million visitors come to the cemetery
each year to pay their respects to the dead and to enjoy the panoramic
view from Punchbowl. The highest point on the rim of the crater
offers a breathtaking outlook of the island of Oahu.
