(Big Island)
Mauna Kea, the world’s tallest mountain measured from its
base on the ocean floor, is the best place on earth for star-gazing.
Its mid-Pacific site is near the equator and it enjoys clear, pollution-free
skies and pitch-black nights with no urban light to interfere with
the view. Mauna Kea summit is home to the world’s largest
telescope, although star-gazing is fantastic even with the naked
eye. On the summit, your guide will point out the observatories
as they begin to open and rotate into position. You’ll learn
about famous observatories such as Keck, Subaru, and Gemini. The
tour is 7-8 hours in duration and times are adjusted seasonally
for the sunset. The trip includes: pick up/return to Kailua Kona,
Starbucks Kings shops at Waikoloa, or Saddle Road; informative narration;
warm hooded parkas and gloves; sunset on the summit with great photo
opportunities; gourmet deli sandwich and soup; stargazing at mid-mountain
with our telescope; and hot beverages.
