(Big Island)
Located in the heart of Hilo, this museum showcases the natural
and cultural history of Hawaii in its exhibits and the restored
mission home. The Lyman Mission House is the oldest wooden structure
on the Big Island, and one of the oldest is the State, and has been
restored to look just like it did when it was built in the 1830’s
as a family home and school for young Hawaiian men. The museum features
a collection of artifacts, fine art, and natural history specimens
as well as archives, special exhibitions and a gift shop. It also
has an impressive mineral and seashell collection from around the
world, as this was one of David Lyman’s interests. A great
learning experience if you are on the Hilo side of the Big Island.
