(Kauai)
Located on the south side of Kauai, on the way to Poipu, this charming
little town developed from the Hawaiian Island’s first sugar
plantation. It was in September 1835, when William Hooper cleared
about a dozen acres, not far from the main intersection of Koloa
town today, and planted the first sugar cane ever in Hawaii –
the rest is history. While the town has been restored and fixed
up quite a bit in the last twenty years, some of the buildings are
the oldest on Kauai. It’s a great place to visit as there
are restaurants and specialty shops, and you can walk across the
street and see the smokestack remains of Hawaii’s first sugar
mill.
Directions:
Old Koloa town is about down Hwy. 520 about 3 miles (from Hwy. 50,)
or 4 miles north on Hwy 520 from Poipu on Kauai's South shore. Hawaii’s
first sugar mill is located in a grass park in downtown off Weliweli
Road.
