The deep, luscious valley of ‘Iao features the ‘Iao needle,
a natural rock formation rising high above the ‘Iao stream and
surrounded by Pu’u Kukui Crater. Standing 2,250 feet high, the
stone pillar covered in green was once used as a natural alter. The
valley surrounding the needle is a peaceful lush area with hiking
trails, exotic tropical plants, and clear, natural pools. The lookout
offers a stunning view of the valley and of Kahului Harbor. ‘Iao
Valley is the historic site of one of the most famous battles taking
place in 1790 when King Kamehameha I destroyed the Maui army in order
to unite all of the Hawaiian Islands. Legend has it that there was
so much bloodshed that day that the ‘Iao stream ran red with
the blood of those killed in the battle.
