The most recognized volcanic landmark in the world was created about
150,000 years ago in a series of violent hydro-magmatic eruptions
during the post erosional phase of the Ko`olau mountain range. Originally
called Le`ahi by the Hawaiians, it’s now known as Diamond
Head because British sailors in the 1800’s thought the crystals
in the lava rock were diamonds. Today you can take a “value”
hike to the top of the crater rim (final elevation 762’) in
a hike that takes about 90-120 minutes. The 1.4 mile round-trip
hike, which encompasses a tunnel and 100+ stairs (with recently
installed lights), is well worth the effort as you enjoy one of
Hawaii’s best vistas – make sure you bring your camera!
(Note: Only restrooms at bottom of trail.)
