(Oahu)
This facility known as Battery Randolf, once a part of Fort DeRussy,
was completed in 1911 to protect Hawaii and Oahu and specifically
the entrance to Pearl Harbor. At one time the facility was home
to two 14-inch diameter rifles, whose 1,600 pound shells could be
fired to a range of 14 miles. Today the building with 22-inch diameter
walls, which defied several attempts at destruction in the 1970’s,
houses a museum that focuses on Hawaii’s military units and
the Pacific battles of WWII. Being free, it is a great value way
to spend part of your afternoon.
